What Can You Do About Your Acne?

More than likely, you or someone you know suffers or has suffered from acne. I use the word "suffer" because having to deal with acne everyday can be a struggle. It's something that just about everyone can relate to. The washing, the scrubbing, the soaking, and all of the products you've swiped on, rubbed on, or patted on just don't seem to keep the pimples from not coming back. It's all part of the never-ending battle.

Did you know that about 90% of all teens suffer from acne?

Did you know that acne affects more than 50% of all adult women?

Did you know that 25% of all adults suffer from acne?

Yes, it is a widespread issue.

It is also a disputed issue.

Some people believe that acne is caused by what you eat or the make-up you wear. I've even heard that a few people think that sex causes acne. Thankfully, that one is not true.

Well, actually none of these are true. Acne is triggered by a number of things, none of which has anything to do with what you do in your normal daily life.

Hormones play the biggest role. That's the reason women have the most trouble with acne care. Your genes also play a part. There are other factors as well, but these two are the biggest players here.

One thing is for sure: having acne-prone skin affects your self-image. If you're like me, it feels like everyone is looking at your pimples, blackheads, and blemishes. You try not to be noticed because you know someone is going to be thinking about all the acne you have on your face. But just as they're thinking about your acne, you're wondering how their face is so clear. It's not fair.

You just have to keep in mind that this acne problem is not your fault. Remember that it's caused by hormones, genetics, and other factors you have no control over.

I know, I know..... it doesn't make it any easier.

There are treatments available to help you with your situation though. There is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Most over-the-counter products will work, but you have to take in account your skin type. Some of these OTC products have a tendency to over-dry your skin because of the acne medication. Some may even cause a rash (like you need something else) on certain skin types. Check the label and you can even ask the pharmacist if you need to.

For more serious outbreaks prescribed acne medicines are usually better than OTC products. Prescribed medications usually have more of a particular component for your skin, such as more benzyne peroxide, or salicylic acid. Whichever your doctor thinks is best for you.

Another issue here is scarring from acne. Scarring is usually caused by messing with the pimple, blackhead, etc. Trying to "pop" the bumps, or even picking at them, is not a good idea. It doesn't help and it can lead to scarring. Don't mess with the acne.

For some people, neither OTC nor prescribed medications do the trick. Their body just doesn't respond to the acne treatment. They just go day by day suffering with their acne. They still try all these products though. Just in case one day it does work for them. We have to keep our hopes up, right?
